I decided to shoot from 60 yds. just for the heck of it. I don't have a pin set for it, but once I got the arrow on the target, I thought it was sorta neat. It also made me wonder about penetration.

I shot two more from 60, then I shot one from 20. Take a look at the pics and give me your idea about the likelihood of actually taking down a deer with a 60 yd shot.

The two arrows at an angle were from 60. They are at an angle because I had to shoot around the house. The straight arrow is from 20. The target is 4 layers of carpet doubled over, so 8 layers. My bow should be set on or around 64 lbs.

Hunting is more than shooting animals. One doesn't hunt in order to kill, one kills in order to have hunted.

Me and my buddy have a shot set up at his house that is 70 yards. WHile I am pretty accurate at 70 yards, I would never consider shooting more than 35-40 yards at a deer, to me there are too many things that can happen at that distance that to me makes it unethical. Yes you hear about it all the time (and see on some bowhunting movies) guys shooting animals in the 50-60 yard range, but at that distance one small jerk or gust of wind and it could be a gut shot sad.gif leaving the animal wounded.

Yeah, besides the chances of something wierd happening, I'm not confident enough with the shot since I'm not actively practicing it. I also don't have a range finder, so not knowing the exact distance to the animal would put me in the "not gonna shoot" category.

Tee hee. 60 yards with no 60 yard pin. Just my 30 yd pin about 4 feet over the target.

If you practice you will get better! How many pins do you have? out west a 40 yd shot is close. Most shots are 50-70 yds. penetration is not an issue, you will pass through a deer. Wind can be a factor if its really blowing.

move your pins or get a single pin sight. Im tuned in to 75 yds.

good luck

I have mine sighted in to 60 yards and have killed a doe at 64 a couple years ago. I practic alot and can group them in there at 60 so i feel if you practice, can hold your pin steady, and are comfortable at that range, why not.

I don't see any issues with penetration at 60. Some think it unethical, and some don't. I shoot target to 60 and group all inside a 6" circle if you count the occasional flier. Most are in a 4" group. I don't shoot animals at the range. I can say shooting 60 gives me rock solid confidence at 40 and under.

I have shot at 60 and further just to see if I could. I practice frequently at 50 and as tbass says it really makes the 30 yard and in shots seem easy. Good for confidence for sure.

Thanks, guys!

At the moment, I don't have the confidence or willingness to try a deer at 50 or 60 yards. I was just fooling around in the yard that day. When I noticed the penetration from that distance, it made me realize that there was the possibilty of taking an animal from that distance.

I'll need to get more pins and some time in practicing before I'm ready for that. But for now, if it's within 30....look out! Haha.

You won't have any penetration issues...
IMHO...you should keep practicing the 60 yard shot....it makes those 30 yard shots look like a slam dunk!
I practice 40, 50 60 but would never take a shot over 40. In fact, I've never taken a 40 yard shot on a deer..but I would if need be!
