Hey Buckmaster,
Trapping is still my favorite outdoor activity. You will learn more about critters by trapping than any other outdoor activity. I doubt if you will have much luck with gray fox in a live trap but you can clean up on coons with one.

Yeah, I just read an article about some guys catching bobcats in cage traps in California but I think a new trapper might get pretty frustrated trying to catch gray fox in them. It wouldn't be the first time I was wrong though. Probably not the first time today even!

Buckmaster ... I would start out with a live trap for raccoons and see if it's something you really want to do, skinning is a art and making the right size of boards for each animal takes a lot of time.
Beaver hoops and skinning one are the main problems that you will soon learn is a lot of work and they are not easy pack if you have to go very far.
Don't want to discourage you but you need to read a lot and understand the care of the fur to get top dollar.
Trapped for years and it's hard work.

I don't think anybody is going to claim to know the most. I trapped for a few years but still have a lot to learn. I would just start another thread and ask your questions. If somebody has something to add they will.

I don't know for sure but I think it would be tough. If the chickens are in a pen or coop and the fox is squeezing in there you might be able to set a live trap there and he might walk into it. I think finding a spot he is squeezing through a tight space will be the key. Just setting a baited live trap out might be hard to get him into. I haven't tried it though so I could easily be wrong.

I don't know what state you are in or the regulations for that state so it is hard to say what is best. If I were going to catch a fox I would use 1 1/2 coil spring traps or cable restraints, depending on terrain, etc. You really need to find out what is legal before going much further though. One other thing to consider is, if you have a bunch of chickens in a 50 acre field you are always going to have predators coming after them. I don't think removing a fox is going to be the long term fix you desire.
It is a lot of fun though!

It is pretty hard to beat a plain old dirt hole set for canines. Dig a hole about 4" in diameter about 12" deep at a 45 degree angle. Put the bait in the hole and cover it with a wad of grass. Do this against some kind of backing like a clump of tall grass, rock, log, or whatever. You just want it so the fox can't look in the hole from behind so he has to walk in front. Bed your trap in front of the hole with the center of the pan about 6" from the edge of the hole. One of the biggest mistakes people make is not bedding the trap rock solid. If you do this with a scent free trap you have a good chance of catching the fox.
There are a lot of other details you need to get right but if you want a great book on the subject I would suggest Hal Sullivan's books. Trapline 2000 or Canines 2000 are both very good. He has a website and I know there are some trapping forums on the web where you can get more info.
