Recently I had the opportunity to construct a stand to honor a truly magnificent buck my friend shot. I was up for the challenge and was looking for the experience of trying something new. We had a picture of one available through McKenzie and decided this would be the basic design. After coming up with a material list I picked the lumber up from a local saw mill, 4/4 rough red oak. The stand is basically made up of 8 solid raised panels with trim top and bottom. I began construction on the raised panels by milling the rail and stiles with my router table and raised panel bit set. Here they are all finished up.

Having some left over material, I decided to do a mock up of the stand, to ensure that it had the look that my friend wanted.

After getting the go ahead I cut and shaped the panels that sit inside the rail and stiles.

To make a strong joint and ensure I had the proper angle needed I cut one side of each panel using a bird's mouth router bit, I'm sure this stand will be making its' rounds to a few big buck shows and I didn't want it to fall apart. This is a close up of the bird's mouth joint.

All glued up, trimmed and sitting on a nice base.

Two coats of Minwax stain, then 3 coats of Minwax clear.

It's now ready to be shipped to the taxidermist and let the next craftsman begin his work, I can hardly wait to see it all completed.

The rough red oak was $75 and the bird's mouth router bit cost me $40. The stain and clear, around $30. For a total of $145 CND dollars. Man hours????????? Probably 20 hours. I'm going to make two more, one will be completely finished and the other I will leave unstained. I hope to display the finished one at a taxidermy shop and when it sells if the customer wants a different stain I have the unfinished one to fall back on. I think I'll be asking for $350
