After quite a few preadator pictures over the last few years I'm becoming more and more interested in trapping. I only tried one season years ago when I was in my teens with another guy that had virtually no trapping experience. We managed only a few coons and opossoms but thought we were big stuff. Now a friend of a friend has been using legalized "cable restraints" as they are legal if made and set properly here in Missouri. There is of course a class provided by the conservation department that must be taken but it's only about a 5 hour class. This method interest me very much as the cost is low and I'm not even dreaming of being a big fur trader but rather just want to reduce the numbers of fox, coyote, and maybe even bobcat. Any of you guys snare (cable restraint)? If so, where do you buy the components...latch, 350lb breakaway, swivel?

If you are interested in trapping join the Missouri Trappers Assoc. Membership comes with a free subscription to Trapper and Predator Caller Magazine. It has a lot of information and there are many suppliers listed. I think I got mine from the Snare Shop but there a lot. They will list which snares are legal in which states. Look for Wisconsin and Missouri which have the same requirements.
I like the cable restraints for fox and coyote. More effective than foot holds and easier on pets if you catch one.

Thanks Trapper. I'll definately be targeting coyote and fox if I go for this but have you ever snared a bobcat?

Howdy, I'm a newbie here but I do alot of snaring mostly fox, coyote beaver and coon.
I buy most of my supplies from 'The Snare Shop'.
I like 3/32" 7X7 GAC (galv. aircraft cable)and washer type locks.
If you get into it and have any questions, feel free to ask.
Good luck.

Sounds like I'll have to check out the Snare Shop. Thanks for the invitation for more questions. I read the training manual that goes with the class to be legal in Missouri. Pretty interesting.

It sounds like a blast. Unfortnetly in this poor state of MA, trapping is ultimatley illegal sad.gif

I am a newbie at all this and tried it all. Probably most sucessfull at steel trapping. If that is what you would call it...LOL. I have only caught a coon and a turkey in a snare. I had a Coyote one night but he got out. I knew it was a yote because I could here him howling from my house and there was hare all of the barb wire fence were my snare was set. I say read all you can and experience is what will make you better and sucessfull.
GOOD LUCK!
