i'm trying to give old horns a natural apperance. the horns are bleached white from being outside for a long time.
these deer are piney woods deer that have whiteish tips on all the tines with some deep brown with redish tent bases.
i've been practicing with an old set and have used walnut stain and it's a little too dark, lin seed oil was a little too yellow, brown shoe polish worked for the redish tent around the bases but didn't far well towards the tips of the tines. i tried moose's crayon and it worked very well at the bases but i couldn't get anything to match the white tips.
anyone else got any ideas

i didn't realize that the woodstain on top of the spraypaint would be so glossy. it's no big deal, i'll pick some up and see what happens

I had a set of bleached-out antlers a few years back and was wondering what to color them with and a guy told me to use potassium nitrate. I can't remember for sure, but I think I got it from a pharmacy. It's terrible to get old!! I just mixed it with water and brushed it on in coats until I got the coloring I wanted. Looked very natural.

Get potassium Permanganate from Jonas supply co. (1-800-525-6379) The more you put on the darker the horns get, we have been useing it for over 35 years and it works great.
