My son and I are thinking about hunting caribou for his graduation present. Any suggestions or any words advice?

Go with one of the outfitters. Did that about eight years ago. If you have to drive to Montreal and you're driving a 4 wheel drive, pull fuses or otherwise disable the vehicle wherever you park it. Ours was stolen (along with the trailer) and never recovered. Friends who went two weeks later had two 4 wd stolen. All these cars were stolen BEFORE we left for the hunt. Same thing with the friends, one was stolen from the hotel, the other at the restaurant they went to eat at. Fortunately we had taken all our gear and firearms into the hotel before the thieves took off with the vehicle. Your hunt would still have to go on if they stole everything, you'd only have to borrow someone else's gun in camp and you're clothes would be kind of stinky from all the hunting. Maybe it's changed since then, but be very careful. Hotel had fenced parking, but it's crowded and you have a good chance of coming home with a dented car. Saw one guy trying to get the car out of the parking area bump/dent two different cars trying to get out.
Great hunt. Never saw the huge herds but had enough caribou so everyone got at least one. Can't stress vehicle safety enough, Montreal police aren't the biggest help.

Thanks for the information. I had heard some things like that before but had no idea it can be that bad. Did insurance cover the cost of the vehicle since you were out of the US?

Yeah, insurance covered the guys car and trailer (both of which were basically brand new). Trying to remember which outfitter we went with. I know they said they'd move us if the caribou weren't around. Luckily we had some caribou show up. They brought in a couple hunters who had been out for four days with no sightings. They weren't happy campers. Didn't get one out of our camp either. I'm sure they went home and told everyone how bad it is.
If you feel like going to Canispicu base camp(sp?) by car I think it's eight hours from Montreal on gravel roads. Take a couple spares and put some heavy duty mud flaps on your vehicle. My buddy has done this and still ended up with some dings on the tailgate from the rocks kicking back up from the trailer.
I highly recommend the trip if you can do it. It was fun. The outfitter had a 70 pound weight limit for each hunter for the float plane.
Just remembered the outfitter is Explo - Sylva. Again, it's a fun hunt. Good luck if you go.
ETA sorry I hadn't seen your post since the last time I answered.
