WOW! i've had to use at least lights before tongue.gif

i've been pretty fortunate when comes to looking for deer. out the 20 something deer that i've killed; i've only had to blood trail one. it was a doe that i shot a couple of years ago right at dark. i got her left lung and just after the arrow glanced off of a vine that i couldn't see, she was standing broadsided and the arrow went in at a steep quarting angle. it's kind of weird to shoot a deer broadsided and find lung blood and gutshot. i was puzzled and it took me 14 hours to find her. when i found her she was still warm. how crazy is that wacko.gif

My buddy has a light made by Winchester that has different colored lights made for blood trailing at night. He said it's not very bright but when the light hits the blood it really illuminates it. It was used to find a buck another friend shot at dusk last rifle season. Bad hit, liver shot, but the buck was recovered that night. If they're not recovered the same night they are shot around here, there's an almost certain chance there won't be much left to recover in the morning.

Lug,

I shoot all my deer in the morning just after sunrise biggrin.gif

If you find a small drop of red, especialy dried were it will not smear, spray the peroxide. All blood will foam and turn white due to the catalyst(not sure on spelling).

When I hunted timber with standing water in NC, it is very hard to follow blood in water, but poor/spray peroxide in what you might find to be blood and it foams, you are in the right direction.

I am curious to try the hydrogen peroxide trick. I am fairly color blind and struggle with seeing blood on grass or leaves in the shadows. If its wet and slick blood, I can see the reflections off of the blood drops in good light, but not the color. Otherwise I struggle to follow a blood trail.
Anybody else have this problem?
xxkilla
yeah. she got to track this one

Lugnut,

I am partially colorblind and have difficulty seeing blood in dried leaves. I have used Hydogen Peroxide but Starlight Bloodhound from Tinks works very well. I always have a bottle at camp just in case. $15 for a spray bootle. It is a two part solution that lasts about 8 eight hours after it is mixed. Blood glows in the dark when contact is made with the solution. It even works on blood after it has rained.
lugnut
i have heard of that product from tinks but your the first one i've ever heard of that has used it cheers.gif

Yeah I'm the same way. I use my hunting partner to do the tracking at night. He's real good at seeing the blood trail.
During the day it's not too bad but at night I may as well be out for a walk as try tracking.

Coleman lanterns, propane ones, offer great light for tracking as well. Used one last year for the first time last year and it worked great.

I am almost totally color blind. I can see blue, bright green and yellow. I learned to track back in the seventies from a guy that was part blood hound. His main trick was to go slow. No-one was allowed in front of the lead tracker. Others followed in a v pattern like geese. If you lose the trail stop. He always said there has to be some sign. If you think about it he is right. We always leave signs as we go. The trick is to find the sign. Remember it may not be blood at all. If the going gets really tough he would be on his hands and knees getting the deers view. He taught me many other tricks in our five years or so hunting together.

A trick I use when looking for blood in the rain is toilet paper. Dab the tp on the wet spot if blood it stains the paper, if just water it stays white.

I found a good website on this issue
It even has an online blood trail you can follow

Good information. That person did a lot of work on the site.

I had a Doe take a long run on me last week.
I used several of methods that have been posted on this thread.

I gave her an hour to lie down before tracking

I used two lights while tracking one florescent to provide a large lighted area and other a narrow beam to search for blood drops.

I was able to determine when the deer stopped running and started walking and the direction of travel by looking at the blood splatter.

Several times I got up close to see the blood better.

I found blood on both the ground and branches as she passed by.

One item that was the most important was my compass. I took a reading before tracking so in the dark woods and thickets I could find my way out again.

As I was hunting alone This site gave me the confidence to track her and get her back to the house.
