i know very little about blackpowder rifles so i'm not much help.

how far of a shot would you be wanting to take. i would think if your hunting fields and would like to make longer shots, you would need more powder, that's just a guess though bag.gif

I like the Barnes 250 grain MZ Expander bullet over 100 grains of 777 black powder substitute.

What you need to keep in mind though, is what works for me may not work for you in your particular rifle.

I would highly recommend purchasing a couple of brands of bullets and a jug of powder and then spend a few hours at the range.

Many muzzle loaders will shoot the same bullet with differing accuracy with different powder charges.

Try shooting 3 shot groups to see what combinations of powder charges and bullets give the best accuracy.

Start with a 90 grain powder charge and step up in 10 grain increments, while staying under the maximum load for your rifle.

This may not exactly be the short cut you were looking for. Good luck.

Like processhead said, different rifles like different bullets and loads. I have had good luck with pellets. I use 2 50 grain pellets and Hornady sabots with 240grn bullets. This works well with both of our muzzleloaders.

I use 3-50 grain pyrodex pellets with the hornady sabots and 240 grain bullets. It shoots 3-4 inch groups at 100 yards.

Yeah, I should have mentioned pellets too. I personally never got around to switching over to pellets. I guess I'm too old school.

But pellets would definitely be more convenient than loose powder and there's nothing to measure out. You might give up a little flexibilty during load development but for the average guy wanting a hunting load, pellets are probably the way to go.
