I had a good morning bow hunting. No shots but I love watching the Deer,

I sat up on a field and had a small spike buck come by but he was 60 yards out ...Too far for me with a bow.

Later I had two yearlings come within 20 yards but both were covered in spots.
First time I have seen a 60 pound deer in spots but it was a big for a fawn.

They were chased off by 4 hen turkeys that was funny to see the hens messing with Deer. biggrin.gif

It's always good just to be out there and see what's going on.

Hope you don't mind me posting daily tails of hunting

Today I was not sure who was the hunter or the hunted.
I was quiet going into my stand site and As I took the climber off my back
I set it on the ground and heard something behind me.

I turned around and was looking at a Doe standing 7 yards away.
She was surprised to see me standing there as well biggrin.gif

I did pull back on another doe 30 yards away but by then it had gotten too dark to pick a good aiming point I had to let her walk.

Still any day hunting is counted as a a good day in my book.

I only got one chance to bow hunt last week
It look to be a good day
I got into the woods around 3pm and spooked a Doe on the way in. I set up my climber and made my way up quietly.

After about 15 min I could see deer moving in the low brush 40 yards in the woods but nothing came into range.

Later a yearling came out. and palyed under my stand for a good long while. She has no spots but was oviously a small deer from this year's drop. I let her go.

Later two large does came out. They were dark gray and over 100lbs live weight. As one came near I started to pull back on my bow and she looked right up at me.... BUSTED! blowup.gif

She hung a quick left and was gone.

Oh Well better luck next time.

How do you miss a deer at 25 yards?
I don't know but I did. I shot right under her

Found my arrow in the ground where she was shanding.

So much for me thursday night hunt. sad.gif

Keep posting your hunts! Sounds like you seeing pleanty of deer and having a lot of fun!
Joe Johnson
Well the first part of archery didn't go so well I did have two shots but missed both. Guess I need more practice.

I took a friend hunting on the first day of muzzleloader he has not hunted deer for the last 10 years. I let him use one of my Thompson's and set him over a clover field. He took two small deer that first morning!

I took a large doe last night. I had a 40 pound button buck come out early and play under my stand for awhile then he slipped on into the thick cover. Later I had a 70 lb yearling stick her head into my clearing then sneak out followed by another. These were both shoot-able dear but I spotted a third doe coming out and she was over 100. At the shot she dropped in her tracks! no nighttime tracking! 59.gif

One friend helped me get the cart and up to the house where I used the call in deer registration to check her in. We then cleaned, skinned and quartered. Then got her in the cooler. It was a good night. coolsmiley.gif

Thanks,

This is one of my favorite spots to hunt. It is located on a bottle-neck where the deer are crossing from one feeding area to a thicket where they bed.

I set up in an area that is low. It is dry in the summer but holds about 10 inches of water all winter so the under-brush is cleared out leaving only trees. With an area that is 25 yards wide about 70 yards long it is a good place to see deer and get a clean shot because the deer must cross the 25 yards to get to the other side. Not a bad spot for a piece of State land. biggrin.gif

A friend and I both went out for an evening hunt.
He set up in the area where I took my doe during Muzzleloader.

I went about 100 yards down this field then slipped into the woods about 30 yards. I had a drag rag with doe in heat on it but I did not want a buck because this was a doe only day. I was using it as cover because the wind was blowing into the woods.

I then went another 30 yards parallel to the field and found a thicket. I then looked and found a good spot to view anything that would come out of the thicket and head for the clover in the field. I climbed a tree with the sun and the tree at my back to help hide my outline.

Near dark I had a nice doe come out of the thicket. I took careful aim and took the shot when she was about 7 yards from my stand. She didn't run just went down quickly.

After dark I got down and pulled her to the field where my buddy met me. He had a young button buck under his stand but didn't shoot, as it was very small.

Another good night in the woods tongue.gif

An Update

As of last night I have taken 4. Three Does and a button buck

Last night I shot a good size doe. She was feeding on acorns about 20 yards away.
I was high in the tree maybe 25 feet.

At the shot she leaped straight up in the air about 6 foot, then landed on her chest and pushed with her back legs for about 20 yards before getting up and running.

Thinking it was not a good hit; I gave her about an hour before tracking. I went to the house and got the cart, lights and compass. I had a great blood trail it was like someone was spilling red paint as they walked. She ran about 40 yards then started walking. I finally found her where she laid down. Total run was about 75 to 100 yards. I hit the front part of shoulders. My slug cut the artery giving me the good blood trail but a long run. That 16 gauge slug will tear a large hole. I put her on the scale at home and she was 134lbs.

I was thinking by the way she ran that I hit her in the shoulders. The problem is I was holding on a lung shot. My scope must have gotten hit and is off. I'll go to the range before I hunt with it again

It sounds like you are having a good season. Is Deleware a shotgun only state? Keep posting, I enjoy the reads.
Joe Johnson
Yea it is a Shotgun State. but I can use a handgun, muzzleloader, bow or cross bow during the shot gun season. Hunters choice
Joe Johnson
Well
Hunting has slowed down some what but I have 4 deer in the freezer.
I passed on a large doe during the handgun season.
I have some corn put out and the doe came within 45 yards ... but I had set my limit at 30 yards
because I'm using open sights. I didn't want to wound her whit a bad shot.

Shotgun comes back in tomorrow morning tongue.gif

This is really strange.

I am not a believer in ESP or things like that .... But

I went deer hunting this morning and around 7:30 I had some deer moving into
my area. As I was getting into a position to take a shot, one of the deer spotted
moving and all the deer vanished in seconds. < not strange it happens all the time.

Well I felt I had blown it but decided to sit and wait until at least 9 am before getting
down. Around 8:30 I was getting sleepy and may have been nodding off. this is when I heard this voice
say to me "he is to your right." My eyes popped open and I slowly looked over to see if
anything was there. I didn't see anything so I looked back in front for a second then looked back.
There standing to my right was a spike buck with a 10 and 8 inch spikes.

It was spooky
