I purchased a Remington 11-87 Super Mag Matte Black Finish about 5 years ago. I take this gun both deer and duck hunting. No matter how much I clean it, the salt water has taken its toll. I called around and received a couple estimates of $250-300 to refinish. However there is no guarantee that it will not rust again. I've taken many deer with this gun and do not wish to sell it. I just purchased some rust remover from the auto section along with silicone spray to seal it after. Haven't had a chance to try it out yet. Any other ideas how to get the rust out and keep it looking nice?

Try "Inhibitor" brand gun oil. I haven't found any thing that protects as well. I lasts quite a while as well.

You should just sell it to me for 100 bucks biggrin.gif

MY EXPERIEANCE WITH SALT IS YOU HAVE TO KILL IT BEFORE YOU REFINISH IT.

with that said we always use baking soda

Had my Model 37 Ithaca parkerized for under a hundred bucks, may be worth checking into this or a similiar finish.

Try brownells.com or phone @ 800-741-0015. They sell several bake on finishes in aresol cans for around $30.00. The original "GUN-KOTE" can be used on exterior & interior parts without causing any binding. Their "TEFLON/MOLY" finish is designed for exterior parts only. Both of these are a resin/moly finish that will not be affected by cleaning solvents. They both come in several colors & can be baked in a regular oven. They also have some great "HOW TO" video's on their website. My son is getting ready to try it on his Remington 870.

The most important part is that ALL of the rust must be removed before applying. The best way is to have the gun bead blasted or aluminum-oxide blasted.

These guys have been in business since 1939 & carry EVERYTHING for gunsmithing.

Hope this helps
