I saw a post from LSmountainman and he made reference to a 300 savage.

I have a 300 Savage in a Model 99 that my Dad use to hunt with. I have taken several whitetails with it but I have always hunted with it in places that limit the range to less than 100 yards. I shoot 150 gr. Remington Core Lokt pointed soft point bullets. It really shoots good (1.25" @ 100 yds.) and really knocks a hole in a deer.

How far do y'all think a 300 savage can efficiently kill a whitetail?

The 300 savage is a great gun,my dad bought mine for me just after i was born.I shoot 180 grain soft points, the brush is so thick where i hunt blacktails that i dial mine dead on at 100yds.I have shot mine at the neighbors gun range up to 250yds,but it takes a little getting used to holding a liitle high, the 180 grain really drops off.

I owned a .300 Savage Model 99 for a number of years before I sold it to my brother. I still regret letting it go and maybe I can convince him to sell it back to me some day.

The .300 Savage is ballisticly close to the .308 Winchester and either one is capable of killing deer out to 300 yards if the person pulling the trigger is a competent marksman.

It sounds like your 99 has the accuracy for taking longer shots. If you can place a 150 grain bullet into a deer's vitals out to 300 yards, its gonna go down.

Practice, practice, practice.

it's a 30 cal bullet! We've been using them in our family for 4 generations. I've killed Deer at 300 yds. Dont forget the .308 is just a 300 sav with the shoulder angle changed to load a little more powder.
