I tried something different this year. I checked into a website,
www.deerage.com. You can send the front 2 teeth in and have them aged. Supposedly alot more accurate than wear aging. They do forensic aging of whitetail deer using the cementum annuli method.
They can take these teeth and basicly shave the tips of the roots off and check it under the microscope, count the rings of cementum just like counting the number of rings in a tree. I had got the results of my last october harvest back recently and had guessed my buck to be 5.5 years old and found him to be 6.5 years old. The most basic kit costs around $20 and can take up to 120 days for the results.
I picked up my mount today and a bunch of us were having a conversation about tooth wear and aging and found that mine along with most bucks taken around here do not show much wear for their age. I would think the cementum annuli method would be alot more accurate than checking tooth wear. $20 isn't all that much to find out find out for sure.
