i was wondering if anyone here had trained their dog to find sheds.

My neighbor just got a new dog and i was gonna try and train it to find sheds for me, with his permission of course tongue.gif

Right now, the only thing i can think of is throwing the shed far away in a field and walking and seeing if he can find it biggrin.gif Any tips, how did you train your dog?

i've heard guys say that you need to give him a shed to play with as a puppy. then slowly work him into finding them.

are you worried that your contraption wont work??

i know its not gunna work this year, the deer are too skiddish about it.

i have put a camera on it a few times and they walk around it and go to my other bait pile, even when theres no corn in that 1. They just wont eat from it this gtime! tongue.gif

you could always lay and wait next to trails and grab them off there heads when they walk by laugh.gif

nope, tried that this morning.

i climed a tree over a deer trail and hung a lasso down. when the bucks walked by i was gonna lasso his headgear and pull them up, the problem i ran into, was the buck wasnt ready to shed wacko.gif boy that was fun.....

haha! biggrin.gif

I'll find 1 or 2 this year i bet, if i keep baiting.

maybe so. i look every year and never find one. then, this year while deer hunting i walk up on one. you just never know when and where you'll find one i guess

What you do is talk with a cattle rancher. He's bound to have one of those tranquilizer guns that shoots the darts. Get the gun and some darts and simply go deer huntin'. When that big ol' buck steps out, pop him. When he passes out, pull his antlers off. If it is too early, you may need to saw them off. When he wakes up, he scurries away and you keep the prize. This works equally well during actual deer season. You get the antlers and he grows a nicer set the next year.

Good Luck! LOL
