Full Version: 200+ yard muzzle loaders

One of my brothers and one of my friends have been watching the hunting shows on cable. And they are saying they are shooting or claiming to shoot deer at 200-250 yards with muzzle loaders. Is it possible that these guns have the accuracy for shooting these distances. I know a couple of the guns they have been looking into are the T/C Pro hunter and Omega Z7. Would these be good choices? Or are there better options to be considered? Any thoughts or comments would be much appreciated.

i suppose anything is possible. i would be concerned with a close up shot with a smoke pole if it was dead on at 200 yards though. the trajectory wouldn't match up for a close up shot and you would likely shoot over the deers back.

I get a consistant 8" drop at 200 yds when zeroed at 100yds shooting 150gr. powder and using sabots in my old Knight Disc 50 cal.

Ive done it at the range - TC Omega - 150 grains of powder 249 grain sabot - its dead on at 100 and then I got the NIkon Omega scope - its got the reticle that set you right up for the shot out to 250 - i was able to hit a pie plate at 250 consistantly. although - ive never shot at a deer that far - seems like i muzzleload more out of my bow stands in the late season then i do my rifle set ups... this set up is good for pointblank shots to 250 yards - and it does work

check this out it wil explain it for you -

I have a Knight Disc 50 caliber. First deer I shot with it was a doe at 225 yards. Sighted it in at 150 yards with 150 grains of Pyrodex. Doe went about sixty yards. So yes, they can shoot that far accurately with the inline muzzle loaders. As a matter of fact, here in Michigan you can only use either a shotgun or muzzle loader during the gun season in the southern lower and I've about quit using the shotgun because of the accuracy of the muzzle loader. That said I don't try to shoot that distance but this was on a picked corn field and I thought she was only about 175 yards. I'd dropped my range finder from the stand and never found one of the batteries for it which is why I was a bit off in my estimation of range. I did hold a bit high for the shot and hit her perfectly though.

It must be the Green Mountain Barrels on the Knights. coolsmiley.gif

Thought I would bring this old thread up . . . and update it with some info on the Ultimate Muzzleloader. . .

See the site: Ultimate Firearms . . . Home of the BP Express muzzleloader

This gun is made just outside Lansing about 10 minutes from house. The gunsmith/inventor of this gun is a genius when it comes to muzzleloading. This gun is made to shoot 200 gr. Pyrodex and a 275 gr saboted bullet(Fury) out the muzzle at approx 2380 fps. It is signed in at 200 with a 4" high 100 yard mark. With a ballistic scope or Adjustable Range Scope you can shoot to 300 or 400 or even 500 yards and still maintain over 1000 fps. I have topped mine of with a Leupold Mark AR(Adjustable Range) 3x9x40 scope.

Many deer have been dropping from shots well over 200 yards with the BP Express. This gun is built around a Remington 700 bolt action, custom trigger, custom made barrel. The primer is a .45 Win mag brass case capped with a Magnum Rifle primer for a very hot ignition system. All 4 Pyrodex pellets are burned up in the first 9" of the barrel. Very easy 2 patch cleanup as there is very little residue left behind. The action NEVER has any blowback from the priming system so it is always clean.

I have one of these guns and all of the claims on their website are true. I have shot with their people and this gun is unbelievable. They send shooting teams to the NRA long range shoots and win it all. the other companies hate to even send their shooters to the contests as they never win. LOL

If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Here's a few pictures for you . . .

Two of the does were 200+ shots from shooting sticks. . . they went down in their tracks as if PoleAxed. Really love this gun. You can put your shotguns up for sale if you own this one as it shoots like a rifle. That new scope I just put on it is unbelievable. Sighted in at 200 and then you install(allen screws) a custom made Range cap to the top turret that is calibrated to the cartridge and ballistics you are shooting. Range the animal and then just rotate the turret to the appropriate setting. the crosshairs of your scope are now adjusted to give you the appropriate range. Just put the crosshairs on the critter and touch it off.
