Ok im sure there are some of you out there who have a shotgun dressed right out for turkey hunting.. within the next couple of weeks i want to purchase a 3 1/2" 12 gauge and i was wondering what kind of gun and setup some of you have. I am looking at the red-dot scopes out there and the new ones look pretty neat and are fairly affordable. I am looking to keep the cost under a grand for everything which shouldnt be hard. This is going to be my "turkey gun" only so id like to have a camo finish on it. feel free to post your pictures if you have any.

I just went out and got my 1st turkey gun a remington 870 super mag 12 guage od green barrel and action with a camo stock - i just ordered a jelly head choke tube and im ready to roll a bird over !

i did alot of research on it and found that the mossbergs just felt cheap in my hand.. when i hold a remington i know its in my hand. the mossbergs had a very loose action and pump.

make sure you get something with the 3.5 " chamber so you can really reach out there and touch those birds

Nice looking gun mattyrad! I was looking at the new Remingtons that they came out with. Very nice guns but a little out of my price range. Yea no matter what i get im gettin a 3 1/2" since i dont need another duck/goose gun.

I bought a remington 1187 x-mag ,full camo, this winter at Dick's Sporting Goods. By the time I was done with the sale and the rebates I think it only cost me $550! You can't go wrong with that! I love the gun. Before that I was using my SP-10. I am selling the SP-10 because I am not doing as much goose hunting any more but it was definitely a reach out there and touch em kinda gun!

Is that the reminton 10 gauge? i was looking at the new sp-10s with camo finish and thumbthole stocks and they wanted around 2 grand. Not sure if its the same one but good looking gun!

i got mine for $300.00 - it was on the used rack at the local gun store - they had it listed for 450 i offered em 300 and took it home

is it the 2008 sp-10? i was on the remington site the other day and saw it listed for somewhere around 2000. if i could find one for 300 id do it in a heartbeat.

At $300 I would buy em up in a heartbeat.... I am selling one of mine(I have 2). It is not camo, but has the black parkerized metal. Has no more than two boxes of shells through it. I will sell it for $800 but no less.

I have a Remington 870 SPS-T 3 1/2"supermag camo dipped. It kills great. It was also killing my shoulder, so I added a Spec-Ops recoil reducing adjustable tactical stock to tame it. I have a Simmons Pro Diamond 4X turkey scope on it with see-thru mounts. I have took Toms with it at 48 yards with ease.

for the money, an 870 is the best you'll find.

i shoot a moss 835 ultra mag. don't buy this gun. it shoots great but shooting it does bare some similarities to pulling on a mules tale. 2 seasons ago i was shooting 3 1/2 in number 4's and i had my arm pinned between the tree and the gun when i shot; i thought i had broke my arm. i roled around on the ground for a few minutes before i remembered that i had shot a turkey.

my dad has the 870 and he killed one at 50 yards a couple of years ago with 3" shells.

the best gun i have for shooting turkey's is an old browning A5

I will go against the convention wisdom stated so far in this post. You do not need a 3 1/2" 12 ga to kill a turkey. They kick like the devil and weigh a ton to tote around the woods. I think you would be better served with something like a 3" Wingmaster. Then spend the extra money on the scope of your choice. And lastly, 3-4 choke tubes for the gun and 4-5 different kinds of shells and do some patterning.

When it's all said and done. Most turkeys that are killed, could be killed with a 2 3/4" 1 1/8 oz trap load of 6 shot.

STS I agree.... sort of. While 1 piece of shot in the head will kill any turkey. Most close encounters, a 2 3/4 load will work but when you start to stretch the distance out, forget it. I can consistently kill geese out at 60 to 70 yards with my 10 ga. I could never do that with with a 2 3/4 load! Heavy, you bet, but I eat better!

roflmao.gif roflmao.gif roflmao.gif Lug I have the 835 Ultramag. I know that you feel the kick a little but not that bad. One thing I can say every bird that I shot dropped instantly and never kicked. A couple of them were at 40 yards plus. The 835 and Browning Turkey shotguns are the only ones that are back bored that gives a tighter pattern at longer ranges.

Whatever shotgun you shoot I suggest trying some Heavy Shot through it. I believe the stuff used to be made by Remington but now it has it's own name as Heavy Shot. The stuff has been amazing for me. Penetration and patterning have both been very noticably better through Mossberg 500, Beretta 390, Browning Gold 3-1/2, and a 870. The stuff is crazy expensive but I don't drop the hammer on turkey ammo more than a few times a year. I've been hunting from the same box now for a few years and killed a couple toms at distances further than I care to admit taking shots.
FORMAKOS
I use a Remington 1100 3 inch mag cut down to 23 inches and fitted with a screw in choke system by Carlson. You need to get at least 3 different chokes starting at .640 and then .660 and maybe a .675. Then, pattern each choke with at least 3 different turkey loads. You will be amazed at the different patterns you get. Good luck.
