Full Version: I want an AR-15

Hey everyone. This is my first post in this forum.

I would absolutely love to have an AR-15, but not sure it would be very practical. All i own is a Rem 870 shotgun, a Knight muzzeloader, and a Rem 22 rifle. I am going to be getting a Springfield Arms XD .40 cal pistol with Crimson Trace laser sights here very soon for home defence and to plink around with. First pistol for me. It was hard enough to talk my wife into letting me have a pistol in the house. She is intimidated enough by the pistol. I haven't even mentioned wanting an AR yet. That may be down the road a little.

Just wanting to know from the AR owners how they like their guns and what they do with it other than target practice. How much could i expect to find a used or new one for? I would prefer new. What caliber is best?

THX, Jerry.

I use mine for hunting when out for coyotes and out west for prairie dogs. Check out AR15.com for lots of info. Accurate, fun and can be had in lots of calibers. Just plain fun to shoot the guns.

Well I'm an Old Fart, and I did not see any reason to have an AR till I played with one that a friend of mine had. That was last November. I decided to look into one and bought it piece by piece, I got it finished up last Friday. Shot it Saturday to sight it in with an old 4 power scope. My last three rounds at 50 yards were a clover leaf. I will use it for varmint and predator hunting and of course some target shooting. It is a fun gun and very customizable. coolsmiley.gif

As to the Mrs. being intimidated that is something you have to address. Pens don't misspell words, the user does.
Should you decide to get one I would go with the .223 first.

I'm in a similar boat as you. I'd love to have one but haven't been able to convince myself and haven't really even tried on the wife yet. I was thinking the .223 as well for cheap amo and plenty of capability for me. It would be a predator hunter, plinker, and survival rifle (heaven forbid it's ever needed) for me. I've only had my hands on a Bushmaster. Any thoughts as to which one is the best bang for the buck...no pun intended?

Edit.......just realized there's a post just a few down in this forum about the ARs.

223 ammo is not as available as it used to be, due to the war. We order ammo by the cases and with the current world events, we had to wait several months to get our department enough ammo for our shoots. Even with that said I would still go with a 223. Colt would be my suggestion as far as make.

I've had my Rock River Arms Entry Tactical for a couple months now and absolutly love it. The only problem was waiting for my rifle to come in. I've looked at Armalite and Bushmaster and have to say that the fit and finish of my Rock RIver is MUCH better. Also this rifle is extremely accurate. I was very impressed with the accuracy even though I was shooting Wolf ammo and other inexpensive rounds. As for Colt. Eveyone says they're the best but it's all a matter of opinion. I have Colt firearms and love them too but cannot really give an opinion on their AR's. Choose one that is right for you and fits your budget. Good luck. Oh definitely check out AR15.com for tons of useful info.
