Well turkey season is upon us and i just found out that ive been drawn for a tag. i got my calls out yesterday (couple slates, boxes and a 1/2 dozen mouth calls) and Ive been wanted to try something new since its been a few years since ive tried a new call. With the price of some of these calls id rather listen to what you have to say before finding out the hard way that it might not be a good one.

So what kind of calls do you use and what brands. Likes? Dislikes? Im aiming for a call that you can buy from your local gander/cabelas/bass pro but id like to hear of your hand made calls too if you have any. Thanks

i use woodhaven mouth calls, they are durable and have a great sound to them.

i use lynch box calls, it's just a classic at a great price.

i use primose frictionite surfaces on my slates, i've gotten a lot of quiet birds to gobble with that particular surface.

just remember that you don't have to call them so much. turkeys cluck more than any other vocalizations. i hear guys out in the woods every spring that just yelp and cutt nonstop. it's no wonder it's so hard to get a gobbler to come to you after the 2nd week of season on public land.

i know you probably don't need my advise but turkey huntin really gets me going coolsmiley.gif

lol i need all the help i can get Lug. Im the first one in my family to take up turkey hunting so really have noone to tell me what and what not to do other than a couple friends who hunt turkeys and watching videos. Im taking my cousin with me this year and itd be real neat if each of us got one in the same weekend. The last turkey i got was when i was 17 so its been 5 yrs of being skunked. Had a few shots but nothing bigger than my first bird. Thanks for the input

I just picked up a A-way box call at the turkey show. Can't wait to try it out. I bougth the over the counter license,don't start until May5. Holy cow BT,I graduated in"85". Like Lug said over calling will reck your hunt, alot of birds come in tight lipped.Just because you don't hear him don't mean he's not coming. Do alot of scouting and trust your judgement. Good luck to all.

good point there, it reminds me of another turkey hunting secret;

if you got a turkey gobbling good and he just stops gobbling all together; get ready cause that means (sometimes) that they are on there way.

I have used primos for a year and a half. They work great, I called in plenty of birds with them last year, but I also use a custom made mouth call i got at a festival, called in 15 with it this winter tongue.gif

I'm thinking of buying the one from primos where you blow into it, and you can yelp cluck putt and cut and even gobble with it.... I'll let you know.

right now I use the Power Crystal.

BT...
If you need another place during that early hunt, give me a yell. It's a ways down here, but there are lots of birds, and I'm always open to take folks out to chase birds. rolleyes.gif

Hey i appreciate it Pete. One of my buddies just called me Sunday and said his hunting partner backed out this year due to out of state work and I can tag along with him. Hes been seeing a bunch of Toms lately but they havent broke up yet. That makes 4 places to hunt but if i dont connect i might have to give you a jingle biggrin.gif

I use a legacy blood wood slate call, it works great, i love it. Other than that all i use is custom made mouth and box calls.
