Okay, I see alot of turkey while deer hunting, but this spring I want to actually hunt these turkey. I bought a box call this past Fall. I found a cool vid on utube, so I've been practicing the call. I guess it sounds about right. So, a few questions: Any general advice on when to use the call and which sounds to make? The kill zone: How big is it and compared to a deer, where is it? any help much appreciated!!!

The sound doesn't need to be perfect, the rhythm is much more important. The basic call is 3 or 4 yelps which are easy to do on a box call. I use a lot of clucks and purrs also but they are a little harder on a box call. If you can justify it a slate type call is a lot more versatile.
If you are using a shotgun the kill zone is the head and neck. I use #6 shot and aim for the waddles, the bright red part of the neck where the feathers stop.

Thanks trapper! I guess I failed to mention that I'll be using a bow. Unfortunately uncle sam is hitting pretty hard this time so I'll have to stick with my box call for now. If I can get them within 30 yards of my ground blind I should be okay. Just not sure exactly where to aim for. Also, Is using a tree stand overlooking the fields to risky to be seen or should I stick with the ground blind only?

I am no expert on killing turkeys with a bow but people I know that do it a lot say to aim where the wing joins the body if broadside. I would stick with the ground blind personally.

I agree with trapper. Ground blind with a bow (Turkey's look up a lot!) when I use the bow I like to hunt green field edges out of a ground blind with a couple of decoys if ya can afford em. I aim for the wing butt on the broadside and the base of the fan ("Brown eye LOL") if facing away...which IMO is the most perfect shot fo the bow! HAVE FUN!!!

I am not a Bowhunting turkey "expert" but I have shot my fair share.
I personaly like the back or directly throught the chest and out the back. Broadside is hard for me anyways. They move a lot and the vital is small. Break the back anywere from the neck down to the base of the tail and all will be well.

O yea, Have Fun!
