Going with a blend I came up with today at the seed mill. I wanted to grow something I could cut and turnips don't allow you to do that and I already have enough clover planted. So I added a couple things the deer have really liked in the mixtures I used in the past two years.

4 types of clover; Red, White, Ladino and Alsike 3lbs.
Rapeseed 3lbs.
Chicory 1lb

The 7 lbs. ended up costing $19.55, not too bad.

I bought a 2.5 gallon jug of the glyco at $117 today! It was $70 something last year, oh well. I'm not going to kill this plot off before I plant but I will need it for the road plts. This plot is coming back almost all clover so I think just by tilling it under I should be fine. I'm going to rent a nice hydrostatic tiller and really work the thing up. It's too hard to get a disc back on this one.

I dumped 500 lbs of lime on it today and some fertilizer. I will add a little more fertilizer when I seed it.

Here's what it looked like today, you can see my mineral block stump on the left. It's in a nice spot between the road plots and the clover plot. I do have a stand up and maybe I will actually hunt back there this year...

Hope it grows unsure.gif

That spot looks sweet Steve. You even have trees in the middle of the plot to hang some cameras. That mix should keep the deer around well into the fall. coolsmiley.gif

I remember that spot. Looking good.

I'm grabbing 10# of the Deer Country Trail Mix from Widdes for another small Woodland Food Plot. At $2.95/lb., not too bad of a price. Supposed to be better than the Deer Country Field Mix for my application, requires less sunlight and grows up "lucious" they told me. (30% White Clover, 30% Rye, 20% Creeping Red Fescue, 15% Tree Foil and 5% Alsike Red Clover). What do you guys think?

Getting 40# of 10-10-10 to fertilize both plots also, another $12.

That'll be all I'm planting this, my first year of doing this.

Willy,

Clover RULES! The rye gets really tall and the deer will still be gnawing on it late into November. Just like turnips they will eat it right to the dirt. I know nothing about the Fescue or the tree foil. I thought tree foil was the stuff crazy people wrapped on the tree trunks to fend off army worms??? I just tilled up a bunch of my rye and clover today to make way for some fresh stuff. It was a pretty good workout coolsmiley.gif

I was busy today.

It has been a pain to try and work the wheeler and disc around the figure 8 plot with the trees so I rented a 9hp hydrostatic drive tiller and gave it a whirl.

It worked VERY well.

I didn't spray and I hope I don't end up regretting it. I have 2.5 gallons of glyco in the garage. Reason I didn't spray is most of the spring growth was (80%) clover and the rest appeared to be rye grass.

After tilling up the figure 8 and having such good luck with the machine I decided to do a part of the road plot and was equally pleased with the results.

The figure 8 got my special 2008 blend of 4 clovers, rapeseed and chicory and the road plot got my usual 4 clovers, turnips, chicory, rapeseed, rye grain mix.

The tiller left an awesome bed and I just hand raked the high spots and seeded/fertilized. The wheeler worked great for compacting the soil and I have a really good seed to soil contact.

Still a little worried about weeds beacuse of not spraying and getting this in so early. You could have never gotten back there with a disc and wheeler today, the ground was still too wet.

Ranger was a big help. He found all his toys he left out there last year when we worked up the plots.

I still have a pretty good stretch of the road plots to put in but it feels pretty good to have the clover plot done and these seeded today.

Here's some pics of the day....

Heading back to the house. Feels like I wrestled a Grizz after running that tiller for 5 hours.

Steve that tiller really does a nice job. You are getting a nice early start. Getting your mix in early should really give it a good chance with the spring rains and the moisture that all ready is in the soil. I haven't started any thing yet. If the weather cooperates I plan on doing some liming and discing next weekend. I have 3 acres that I will be planting in soybeans this year.

Bet those old bones of yours are a little stiff this morning. That tiller does a nice job, McDonald Rental? I think you need to buy one so I can borrow it. biggrin.gif

Was looking at the 4 wheeler discs at L & M last night......just looking. bag.gif

Ended up buying the Frozen Forage "Wild Game Buffet" instead of the trail mix from Widdes. Great in the shade and is made in Bemidji, so should grow here nicely. About $15 bucks cheaper too. 10-10-10 was about $3 cheaper also. I'll scratch out that 2nd plot tomorrow and fertilize both.
