I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAD SOME ADVICE ON HOW TO SHIP A DEER MOUNT HOME. I LIVE IN FLORIDA AND SHOT A DEER IN IOWA. THE TAXIDERMIST THERE DOES SHIP MOUNTS SO I HAD A BUDDY GO AND PICK IT UP. I NEED TO SHIP IT TO FLORIDA AND WAS WONDERING WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST CONTAINER TO SHIP IT HOME IN. I WAS WONDERING IF A CONTAINER WAS AVAILABLE TO BUY OR IF I HAD TO BUILD ONE MYSELF. ANY ADVICE ON HOW TO GET IT HOME WITHOUT DAMAGING IT?

I think the best thing to do is build a wooden crate out of 2x4s and flake board. Also, make sure you put some planks on the inside and secure antlers, etc to the planks (after wrapping them in foam). This will provide a lot of stability. I have shipped a number of mounts and antler chandeliers and this has worked well.

DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THESE KIND OF CRATES WEIGH. SHIPPING THIS CRATE AND THE MOUNT COULD COST A FORTUNE

hard to say, but it can get heavy...FedEx ground or freight may be a good way to go...

I don't know what it would cost today but when I checked to have my Shoulder deer mount shipped from South Texas to Wisconsin in 1999 it was over $300. My guess is that it will cost in the $500 range. My brother also had one to bring back so we rented a Mini-van and took a road trip. Even with the rental and gas we saved money. Might want to book another hunt and drive up to pick your mount up or find some one from Iowa that is going to vacation in Florida or that stays in Florida in the winter to bring your mount down with them if they are driving.

WHAT ABOUT CRATE DIMENSIONS......I HAVE A BUDDY THAT WORKS FOR FED EX AND HE SAID YOU COULD LINE A BOX WITH WOOD PANELING AND THAT 100 LBS WOULD BE ABOUT 150 BUCKS BUT I DIDN'T KNOW IF IT WOULD WEIGH THAT MUCH

Maybe something like this. Except smaller.
