Hello, my name is Linell and I joined this site yesterday. Before I start, let me say that this site is pretty darn cool.
Anyway, here's my problem/oppurtunity. There is a deer crossing that goes from my property to a deer camp across the road. I set up a corn feeder near that trail and it was working well, I even killed a six point there. Yeah, that's all well and good, but I think deer have stopped coming. I don't have a trail cam, I just have what I can see, and I haven't seen any door or that much of my corn gone, so I don't think deer are going back to that spot anymore.
About half a mile a way is a small swamp with an island in the middle. That island isn't very big, the size of a large living room maybe, but has a thicket and a few harwoods. I've never hunted on that island before because the swamp around it is pretty thick and if I don't cross it I'll have to shoot from a pretty good distance.
My problem with the distance is gone though, I just got a 30-06. So, here's where the title comes into play--I want to turn that island into deertopia. I plan on moving my corn feeder to near the entrance (which is kinda like a dry-creekbed filled with swamp) on solid ground then getting a mineral rock and putting between the thicket and the open part of the island, right where I can get a nice shot. I also would like to put a salt lick maybe, or something like that so that they will be even more attracted. Only limiter is money, try to keep a budget under about $30. Yeah, I know, not likely, but it is ideal if you know any tricks that use stuff around teh house...
Thank you for being patient with a newbie to your site, but I really appreciate any help with this kind of thing, I've always hunted with dogs and this is my first year still hunting/stand hunting and I'm not used to it.
Anyway, thanks.
