That depends on what type of hunting you do.

If you sit in a blind or tree stand then a stand gun that is scoped and very accurate would be ideal like a rifled barrel scoped single shot like the H&R or several others just depends on price. Mossberg makes a great bolt action and there are others that are great stand guns.

If you stalk them on the ground or a tecnique called still hunting then a red dot, holosight ,or iron sighted gun that is fast handling would be better suited . Here the rifled barrel does not matter because distances will be less than 50 yards. Ammo will also vary as some like slugs and others like 00 buc. Several follow up shots may be necessary so a pump or auto would be good.

If you have some combination of the both then the trade offs get harder. The choices vary by your preferences and your budjet. A lot of hunters have modern slug guns with rifled barrels that are pumps or autos with red dot ,or holosight and practice with them to bring them up on moving deer. If a deer is out to 150 yards or so they feel that with the practice they have had at the range they can still bring home a deer if they can get a steady rest.

The bottom line is decide what type of hunting you do most and plan for that and practice with that gun and get confidence in your ability with it. There is no alternative or replacement for confidence in the weapon you have with you when the deer show up.

i got a mossberg 835 mag that i bought a rifled slug barrel for. i tried to shoot 3" slugs and that was a huge mistake, if you've ever seen a rodeo clown get run over by a bull; shooting a 3" slug through a mossberg feels like the rodeo exsperiance looks.

i moved down to 2 3/4 shells and it was a little better but not much. long story short, the barrel is still in my gun cabinet and has never been sighted in. 3 people have tried including me and it's a crippling exsperiance.

i have had buddies that shot remington guns with slug barrels and they were accurate with a scope to 100+ yards

Oh I forgot to mention recoil . If your recoil shy the an auto is the way to go. With rifled barrel and a good scope should fill the bill. The reason i mention the singles and the bolt action is that I have seen them shoot in the same hole at 100 yds. Just as accurate as any rifle. Stand guns need to be accurate imho.
