Mom, Kade (7 year old son) and I went out yesterday at 11:00 after the rain and thunder storms we had.. Season goes out on Tuesday. We went to this very undependable farm and got lucky. I went out alone the day before and had 5 jakes within 15 yards but passed because my little man wasn't with me. I have been to this farm many times and have not heard a thing.....It just worked out this weekend fate etc....
Anyway, we got there and got set up in the area I saw the jakes and started calling....not much going on but eventually got a hen calling back and in she came squawking at me...we argued back and forth and she came in to 15 yards...Kade loved it.
During the hen squawk we heard a distance gobble. The gobbler was interested and started to come. WE had him going and going which was fun with Kade. He was committed but then the farmer drove down to where we were in his tractor along with a guy in a truck. I was sick as he went right to where the bird was. Of course the bird shut up and we had to move. WE thought the bird might get into the woods adjacent to the field he was in so we tried to cut him off, got set up again and started calling. After a bit we heard a gobble, right back where we were......oops, the bird never left the field... We scrambled back to where we started and got set up hoping not to be seen. Called again and the bird went crazy gobbling and we then realized there were two birds... They showed up in the barway and hung up a bit.. but that old hen they wanted shut up and they couldn't stand it so they came a lookin. I yelped one more time when they were about 20 yards so Kade could see them gobble and then let the biggest of the two have it.....
One of those meant to be hunts........Kade's first turkey harvest......hmmm should have entered the contest after all
Awesome memory.. pictures from a telephone..forgot the camera....
