I can't beleive this has not been posted here yet. Two cases of CWD have been identified in Oneida County, NY. Both were in does that came from captive deer herds within 5 miles of one another and which had some history of deer exchanges. One of the animals had been slaughtered and fed to a number of people at the Verons Fire Dept. wild game feed.

The state has quarantined all deer farms in the state and is investigating potential spread of the desease to other farms and wild herds locally. Some 400 wild deer are scheduled to be killed by the DEC and tested for CWD.

It goes without saying that this is not good for NY or other northeast states. Watch for updates.

Here's the latest on CWD in New York State: Of the 22 deer in the two captive herds that were killed and tested, five showed positve results for CWD. In an effort to find the source, investigators traced deer supplied to the Onieda County herds in the 1990s to a now defunked deer farm in Hamilton County near Arietta. Since that herd no longer exists and the owner is dead, state official are planning to kill and test about 20 wild deer from a 50 mile radius of the former Arietta farm location. Test results are still pending from some 400 wild deer killed in Onieda County to see if CWD has spread from the two captive herds where it was first discovered earlier this month.

Some NYS hunters are opposed to the extent of wild deer testing, believing it is too big a hit to local populations since deer have to be killed in order for the testing to occur. However, most sportsman's organizations are in favor of the states efforts to track down and hopefully stop the potential spread of CWD in New York.
